Did You Know that People Got Nose Jobs as Early as 600 B.C.?

Wed Sep 01 2021

Historical evidence of the oldest rhinoplasty dates back to 600 B.C., as written in Sanskrit texts. Sushruta, one of the earliest surgeons in recorded history, was the first person to provide a detailed description of what is now known as rhinoplasty or nose surgery—one of the most popular facial cosmetic surgeries in the world.

The nose symbolizes dignity and respect in Indian society. During ancient times, the noses of criminals, war prisoners, and adulterers were amputated as punishment for their misdeeds. The need to reconstruct the external nose paved the way for rhinoplasty to develop, and later become a full-fledged cosmetic surgery that many people are enjoying.

The practice of surgery was already long established in India by the time of Sushruta but in a less-advanced form than what he practiced. He significantly developed different surgical techniques and, most notably, invented the practice of cosmetic surgery. Aside from nose jobs, Sushruta’s early surgeries also became the foundation of many plastic surgery techniques being used today, such as the pedicle flap, repair of earlobe defects, and cleft lip repair.
